CLINTON, N.Y. – Five different players scored a goal as the Hamilton women’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 5-2, in non-conference action Tuesday night. The Red Dragons fell to 2-11-1 with the loss, while the Continentals improved to 6-5-3.
Junior Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) led Cortland with one goal and one assist, and junior Laura Drew (Andover, MA/Canterbury School) netted a goal. Sophomore goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) registered 27 saves.
Sara Taffe and Naomi Woolfenden each recorded a goal and an assist for Hamilton. Jade Alvillar, Megan Ahern and Hannah Bartlett scored one goal apiece, while four others each contributed an assist. Goalie Sam Walther made 13 saves.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Red Dragons grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening period as O’Connor tallied an unassisted goal at 3:31. Alvillar tied the game on the power play at 9:45 of the opening period, and Ahern made it a 2-1 score in favor of Hamilton with her goal at 17:49 of the second period. After Woolfenden gave the Continentals a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal at 1:38 of the third period, O’Connor assisted Drew’s score at 11:04 to pull the Red Dragons to within 3-2. Taffe answered just over three minutes later to make it 4-2, and Bartlett completed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 15:07 for the 5-2 final.
