GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team battled UMass Boston to a 2-2 tie in a non-conference game at The Cooler this evening. The Herons are now 7-2-3 on the season.

The two teams were evenly matched in the game finishing with 35 shots apiece. Senior goalie Maggie Salmon stopped 33 shots in goal for the Herons while Alyssa DePippo made 33 saves for the Beacons (4-6-3).

William Smith opened the scoring at the 9:13 mark of the first period when sophomore Kate Klimaszewski pocketed her first goal of the season. She tipped a loose puck through DePippo’s legs. First-year Jules Kennedy was credited with an assist on the goal.

UMass Boston tied the game when Jane Morrisette scored her fourth goal of the season. Following an offensive zone faceoff, Grace Fisher, who was credited with an assist on the goal, fired a shot from the point that Salmon turned aside. Morrisette picked up the loose puck but had her initial shot stopped. She collected the rebound and flipped the puck into the net.

The Herons regained a one goal lead when sophomore Taylor Morash scored a shorthanded goal just under two minutes into the second period. Morash broke up a play in the neutral zone, carried the puck around the back of the net and tucked it inside the right post. The unassisted goal was her third of the season.

The Beacons tied the game halfway through the third period. When Jane Ann Drill fired home her first collegiate goal. She blasted a shot from inside the left faceoff circle just under the crossbar.

Neither team found the back of the net in the overtime period. First-year Julia Ming had William Smith’s best scoring opportunity of extra session but her wrist shot from the right faceoff circle just missed the crossbar.

Both teams came away empty on the power play. William Smith was 0-for-3 with the extra attacker while UMass Boston was 0-for-4.
