BROOKLYN (July 1, 2015) – The New York Islanders announced today that defenseman Thomas Hickey has agreed to terms on a three-year contract.
Hickey has 48 points (seven goals, 41 assists) in 202 career National Hockey League games, all with the Islanders. The Calgary, AB, native led all Islanders defensemen in games last season (81), set a career high in assists (20) and matched his career high in points (22).
The Los Angeles Kings selected the 26-year-old defenseman in the first round (4th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft. He was claimed off waivers by the Islanders on January 15, 2013. In 212 career American Hockey League games, all with the Manchester Monarchs, Hickey scored 75 points (14 goals, 61 assists) with a plus-24 rating. He was selected to the AHL All-Star Game in 2012.
A 6’0, 190-pound defenseman, Hickey played four years of junior hockey with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League. He totaled 177 points (39 goals, 138 assists) in 262 career WHL games and was named to the WHL West First All-Star Team in 2008 and 2009.
On the international stage, Hickey played for Team Canada at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships, winning gold both years and serving as team captain in 2009. He also represented Canada-Pacific at the 2006 World Hockey Challenge.
