The Hobart College hockey team used a four-goal second period to rally for a 6-3 win over host Neumann in an ECAC West game played tonight in Aston, Pennsylvania. Junior Bo Webster (Aurora, Ontario) led the Statesmen with two goals and an assist.
With the win, Hobart improves to 2-2-0 this season and 1-1-0 in the ECAC West. The Knights are now 1-1-1 and 1-1-0 in conference play. Sophomore Nick Bingaman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) posted two goals and junior Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) registered two assists. First-year goalie Frank Oplinger (Sewickley, Pa.) played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and made 24 saves in his collegiate debut.
Shayne Morrissey scored a goal and earned an assist for Neumann. Ben Curley played 59:22 in goal for the Knights and finished with 33 saves.
Neumann jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with both goals coming in the final two minutes. Matt Zendejas scored first off an assist from Morrissey with 1:51left in the first. Dan McDougall notched a power-play goal 12 seconds later. Mike Davis earned the assist.
The Statesmen then took control of things tallying four unanswered goals in the second period. Senior Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Colo.) started the scoring after passes from Webster and Gamache at 1:29. Senior Tommaso Traversa (Torino, Italy) found the back of the net 1:11 later to tie the game at two. SophomoreTyler Hanzlik (Wisconsin Rapids/Wis.) logged the assist. Bingaman put Hobart on top 13:33 in. Sophomores Mitch Beyer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Bobby Sokol (Belle Vernon, Pa.) set up the play. Webster notched a second power-play goal for the Statesmen after a feed from Gamache to make it 4-2 just 59 seconds later.
Bingaman struck again 34 seconds into the third period to give Hobart a 5-2 advantage. Senior Bronson Kovacs (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario) earned the assist. At6:03, Morrissey scored on a power play off a pass from Brandon Gagne to get the Knights within two at 5-3. With one minute left in regulation, Webster notched his second goal of the night for the final.
The Statesmen were 2-for-8 on the power play, and Neumann went 2-for-6. Hobart finished with a 39-27 advantage in shots.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 14, when they host Nazareth at 7:30 p.m., in their home opener at The Cooler.
