Statesmen break into national poll
The Hobart College hockey team broke into the D3hockey.com poll being voted No. 15 this week. The Statesmen have won eight straight games and are now 10-4-4 overall and 4-1-3 in the ECAC West.
Hobart’s current unbeaten streak is the third longest in Division III men’s ice hockey. Over the weekend, the Statesmen picked up two road wins over Manhattanville. Sophomore Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) shared a team-high with four points against the Valiants. He was named to the ECAC West weekly honor roll for his efforts.Gamache produced an assist in Friday night’s 4-3 win and shared a team-high with three points on two power-play goals and an assist in Saturday’s 5-1 victory. He is tied for second in the conference and ranks 13th in the nation with five power-play goals this year.
The Statesmen sit atop the ECAC West and rank 12th in the country in penalty kills. Hobart has killed 78 of its opponents’ 89 power-play attempts (87.6 percent). The Statesmen rank second in the league scoring defense allowing an average of 2.39 goals per game and third in scoring offense averaging 3.56 goals per game.
Sophomore Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) leads the team with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points. He is tied for second in the ECAC West in goals and tied for fifth in points. Sophomore goalie Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) is sporting a 2.29 goals against average and a .913 save percentage to go along with a 10-3-3 record in goal. He leads the conference in win percentage (.719) and ranks second in goals against average.
Hobart will host Nazareth (5-12-1, 1-6-1) for two ECAC West games in The Cooler this weekend. The teams will face off on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m., and again on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. Fans unable to make the game can follow the action online with Live Stats.
