GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior Bobby Hannah (Burbank, Calif.) notched two goals to lead the No. 9 Statesmen hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Manhattanville in the ECAC West opener for both teams played tonight at The Cooler. Senior goalie Nick Broadwater (Portland, Maine) broke the Hobart record for career shutouts, earning his ninth clean sheet.
Broadwater stopped all 23 shots that he faced to secure the shutout. The previous record of eight career shutouts was set by Keith Longo ’08. It’s Broadwater’s second shutout this season.
Senior Brad Richard (New Bedford, Mass.) logged two assists in the victory. The Statesmen are now 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the ECAC West. It was Manhanttanville’s first game this season.
The Statesmen held a slight 11-8 advantage in shots in the first period. The Valiants had a big scoring chance with 8:40 left in the period. Luc Van Natter broke through the Hobart defense for a one-on-one with Broadwater. However, Broadwater stepped up and rejected Van Natter’s shot.
The second period also proved to be scoreless. The Statesmen came close to scoring on a few occasions. With 5:17 on the clock Hannah blasted a shot on goal that was saved. Sophomore Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Colo.) collected the rebound and fire another shot, but Manhattanville’s goalie Brian Fleming was there to make the second stop. With 2:36 left in the period and Hobart on a power play, McBride sent another shot on goal, but Fleming made the glove save. Fleming finished with 33 saves in 58:50.
The Statesmen finally broke through in the third period. Hannah capitalized on a 5-on-3, notching his first of the night at 5:35. McBride and Richard set up the play. Hannah struck again at 12:21. This time, Richard blasted a shot on goal that was saved and Hannah sent home the rebound. Senior Mike White also earned an assist on the play. Hannah leads Hobart with six points on three goals and three assists this season.
The Statesmen finished with a 35-23 advantage in shots. Hobart went 2-for-8 on the power play, and killed all eight of Manhattanville’s power plays.
