The Hobart College hockey team took a 2-1 lead in the first period and went on to top Stevenson 3-1 in an ECAC West contest played tonight in Reisterstown, Md.
The Statesmen are now 3-0-1 this season and 2-0-0 in conference play. It was the Mustangs’ first loss this year. They are now 3-1-0 and 1-1-0 in the ECAC West.
Eight different Statesmen notched a point in the win. First-year goaltender Alexander Connal (Simsbury, Conn.) finished with 28 saves in his first collegiate game.
Senior Mitch Beyer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) put Hobart on the scoreboard 7:06 into the game after a pass from junior Andrew Silard (Greenwich, Conn.). It was Beyer’s first goal this season. Just 3:26 later, first-year Zach Sternbach (Loudonville, N.Y.) made it 2-0. It was his third goal of the weekend and came off assists from sophomore Tanner Shaw (Toronto, Ontario) and Brandon Bistodeau (Rogers, Minn.).
Colin Woods broke through for the Mustangs with a shorthanded tally with 59 seconds left in the first.
After a scoreless second period, senior Bobby Sokol (Belle Vernon, Pa.) added a power-play goal for the final margin. Junior Tyler Wolf (Napersville, Ill.) and senior Jon Neal (Encinitas, Calif.) were credited with the assists. It was Sokol’s fourth goal this season.
The Statesmen finished with a 37-29 advantage in shots. Hobart went 2-for-11 on the power play killed all seven of Stevenson’s power-play attempts.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, November 11, when they travel to take on Manhattanville in another ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
