WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross’s offense proved to be too much for the Valiants to handle as the Manhattanville College women’s ice hockey team dropped the second leg of their weekend series 6-0.
Junior goaltender Olivia Drew (York, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) made a career-high 31 saves in 48:33 between the pipes, but it wasn’t enough as the Crusaders (3-0 overall, 1-0 NEHC) were still able to find the back of the net six times, outshooting Manhattanville 43-9, to pick up their third consecutive victory to open the season.
The Valiants (1-1 overall, 1-1 NEHC) were held in check on the offensive end throughout the game, recording just nine shots on target. Eight different players recorded shots for Manhattanville, with junior Taryn Harris (Morrison, Colo./Colorado Selects) the lone Valiant registering multiple shots on goal.
Holy Cross jumped out on top midway through the first period, with Izzy Bagi beating Drew for her first goal of the season. The Crusaders tacked struck twice more in the first, on goals from Elizabeth Scala and Sam Girard.
Girard scored her second goal of the game in the second period, giving the Crusaders a four-goal advantage. Holy Cross found the back of the net twice in the final period to put the game out of reach for good.
The Valiants return to action Friday, when they travel to Rhode Island to take on Salve Regina at 7:00 P.M., before taking on UMass Boston Saturday at Playland Ice Casino for their home opener at 3:00 P.M.
