Iroquois Seniors Eric Rogers and Aiden Abraszek set up against East Aurora on New Year's Day.

New Year’s Day brought an exciting win for the Iroquois Varsity hockey team, beating East Aurora 4-3 in the Winter Classic at the Healthy Zone Rink.

The Chiefs scored two in the first, one in the second and one in the third, while East Aurora scored two in the second and one in the third period. Goalie Tyler Fredette manned the net throughout the game, blocking repeated attempts by East Aurora to get ahead of the Chiefs.

Richard Karalus and Pat Stenzel put Iroquois on the board scoring in the first period off assists by Aiden Abraszek and Jon Lavis. East Aurora added two in the second period, while a great goal by Jamie Bonn (assist by Alex Held) had the Chiefs in the lead 3-2 at the end of the second.

Chiefs defensemen Eric Rogers and Garrett Miller helped uphold the lead in the third period with a number of outstanding plays to ensure the Chiefs’ victory. Although East Aurora earned one more goal in the third period, Karalus locked up the win with a goal off of assists by Stenzel and Abraszek. Pat Marrone and Ryan Coulombe stayed strong on defense, helping Fredette earn his first Varsity win this season.
