By Warren Kozireski — Adam Fox was a third round draft choice of the Calgary Flames (66th overall) in 2016 before skated for Harvard and before he was a two-time member of Team USA for the IIHF Under-20 World Junior championships.
Since then they are more than happy with his development. The right shot defenseman played ten games this season before heading to Buffalo with Team USA and had nine assists giving him 49 points over his first 43 collegiate contests.
Add in last season’s gold medal and this year’s bronze as the assistant captain of Team USA helped them medal for the third consecutive year for the first time in program history while racking up five points over seven games as he was consistently among the top three on the team in minutes played each game.
“It’s obviously special,” Fox said about the third medal in a row. “Our goal here was to win a gold medal and we came up a little short, but to walk away with a medal we take a lot of pride in that.
“I felt good. As a returning player I wanted to use my experience from last year to grow my game here and kind of be a leader and I think I did a good job of that.
Fox left the Jericho area and the Long Island Gulls youth program in 2014 for the U.S. National Development Program where he skated for two years before joining Harvard in the ECAC as an 18-year old freshman.
Now Fox has to quickly regroup and head back to Harvard where the Crimson have at least two games every week from now to the end of February.
“It’s similar to what happened last year from winning a gold medal to regular college hockey game, but this (the World Juniors) was a great time and great experience but now my focus is back on school with Harvard and I’m looking forward to that.”
“I’m just taking it year by year to see how my game develops and I don’t want to rush anything,” Fox said about the next level beyond Division I.
As for a favorite memory of this year’s World Junior tournament?
“Probably that outdoor game (against Team Canada). That was an atmosphere that I don’t think I will ever see again. It was special having my family there watching and obviously to come away with the win was nice.”
