Bell Shakespeare''s King Lear is on at The PLayhouse in April
John Bell turns 70 this year, and it’s 20 years since the inception of the prestigious Bell Shakespeare Theatre company. And what better way to prove his mettle than to take on the coveted role of Shakespeare’s eponymous King Lear?
Although this is the third time John Bell has played Lear since 1984, he still gets excited about the role.
“I’ve played Lear twice before, but still take it on with some trepidation-and huge excitement. What a privilege to explore that play again,” says Bell.
King Lear is classic Shakespeare: when the ageing King prepares to divide his kingdom, he asks his three daughters how much they love him. Two tell him what he wants to hear and the third is disinherited and banished to France. From there it’s just a short trip to total chaos.
In an unprecedented union of Bell Shakespeare’s artistic leaders, Marion Potts directs John Bell as Lear in a poetic and powerful production of one of the greatest works in western literature.
Leah Purcell, Keith Agius, Peter Carroll, Justin Stewart Cotta and Paul English and other distinguished actors will join John Bell ins what promises to be one of the great Canberra theatre events of 2010.
