BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Jr. Sabres Youth Hockey Organization announced the head coaches of its bantam, 15U, 16U and 18U teams for the 2016-2017 season.
13U Bantam Minor: Ethan Moreau
14U Bantam Major: Mark Mobus
15U: Andrew Peters
16U: Michael Peca and Jacob Brozyna
18U: Joe Marszalek
Tryout times and player assessment fees will be announced shortly.
The newly named coaches join Kevyn Adams (9U), Tristan Musser (10U), Mike Ansell (11U) and Craig Rivet/Tom Gately (12U), who were announced as head coaches in their respective age divisions earlier this month. This now completes the head coaching assignments for all 10 Jr. Sabres teams.
Ethan Moreau joins the Jr. Sabres organization as coach of the Bantam Minor team and brings 16 years and 928 games of NHL experience. The St. Catherine’s, Ontario resident was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Moreau went on to score 147 goals and 287 points in his 16 seasons with the Blackhawks, Oilers, Blue Jackets and Kings. While serving as captain of the Edmonton Oilers in 2009, Moreau was presented with the NHL’s King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community. Moreau recently joined the Academy of Hockey as a development coach.
Mark Mobus enters his third season with the Jr. Sabres organization and will be coaching the Bantam Major team in 2016-2017. He is currently the coach of the Jr. Sabres Bantam Minor team, which is ranked eighth in the nation My Hockey Rankings. Mobus is a physical education teacher in the Amherst Central School district and coached the Amherst High School Varsity Federation team from 2008 to 2013, winning the Section VI Federation Championship in 2010. He currently serves as an Academy of Hockey instructor for spring and summer development programs.
Andrew Peters joins the Jr. Sabres organization for the 2016-2017 season as coach of the 15U team. Following a ten season professional career, Peters has been active as a broadcaster, co-hosting “Hockey Hotline” on WGR radio and filling in as an analyst on Sabres game broadcasts. After growing up in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Peters spent eight seasons playing for the Sabres organization including three in Rochester and five in Buffalo. In all, the winger totaled 229 games in the National Hockey League with seven points and 650 penalty minutes.
Michael Peca and Jacob Brozyna will work together as co-coaches of the Jr. Sabres 16U team. Peca, the former Sabres captain, has spent the 2015-2016 season coaching the 16U team, which is currently ranked 17th in the country by My Hockey Rankings.
Peca has been active with the Jr. Sabres organization since 2012, serving as head coach and general manager of the Junior-A team before assuming his current role. Peca’s NHL career included 864 games with the Canucks, Sabres, Islanders, Oilers, Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets.
He finished his career with 176 goals and 465 points. Peca won the Selke Trophy in 1997 and 2002 as the NHL’s top defensive forward and also played in the Stanley Cup Final with the Edmonton Oilers in 2006. Brozyna has spent the 2015-2016 season an assistant coach with the Jr. Sabres Junior-A team and head coach of the 14U Bantam Major team, which is ranked 13th by My Hockey Rankings. Brozyna also serves as a part time development coach with the Academy of Hockey.
Joe Marszalek enters his third season coaching with the Jr. Sabres organization and his second as head coach of the 18U team. This year’s 18U squad is ranked eighth by My Hockey Rankings and won its regular season title in the Tier I Elite League. Marszalek has coached hockey in Western New York for 27 years at many levels and has won 11 state championships and four gold medals at the Empire State Games. The Hamburg resident played collegiately at Canisius College and currently serves as the USA Hockey player development coordinator for the west section of New York State.
