The Buffalo Jr. Sabres are now on a seven-game winning streak, powered most recently by a 4-3 victory over the Wellington Dukes on Wednesday night at the First Niagara Rink at HARBORCENTER.
Jr. Sabres captain Zach Evancho had a pair of goals – his 21st and 22nd of the season – to help lead the team to its seventh consecutive victory.
Colton McKenna scored his first Ontario Junior Hockey League goal, with David Baskerville also potting one for the Jr. Sabres.
Tucker Weppner had 33 saves in the win for Buffalo.
The Dukes opened the scoring on the power-play 13:15 into the first period with David Mascarin’s first of the night.
The Jr. Sabres responded roughly two and a half minutes later with Baskerville scoring to tie the game at one.
Zach Evancho then scored on a snipe from the left side under two minutes into the middle frame to give the Jr. Sabres their first lead of the night. McKenna followed with his own beautiful goal from the left side of the net to give Buffalo a 3-1 lead.
Mascarin would tally his second of the night later in the second period to lessen Buffalo’s lead to just one.
Wellington’s Tyler Burnie made things interesting by tying the game at 3 less than six minutes into the third, but once again Captain Clutch Evancho came in to save the day, putting the Jr. Sabres ahead 4-3 with under five minutes to play.
The Jr. Sabres held on for the victory, their seventh in a row. They are now undefeated in the month of December and haven’t lost since November 21.
The Jr. Sabres sit atop the OJHL’s West Division – and Southwest Conference – with 49 points and a record of 23-10-1-2 on the season.
