The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Buffalo State with a 3-0 victory on the road on Sunday afternoon. Oswego’s win improves the team’s overall record to 10-4-1 on the season while its conference mark moves to 6-1-1.
Bridget Smith earned the win for the Lakers, stopping 16 Bengal attempts between the pipes. As a team, Oswego out-fired Buffalo State, more than doubling the Bengal shot total (34-16).
The two teams played a completely clean first period, void of any goals or penalties. It was a penalty on Buffalo State that gave the Lakers their opportunity to score in the second. Kendall Appelbaum was able to put Oswego on the board just over a minute into a power-play chance after a Bengal two-minute hooking penalty. It was Appelbaum’s fifth goal of the season and was assisted by Ashley Lyman and assistant captain Jocelyn St. Clair.
Oswego held the 1-0 advantage through the final intermission until it was able to add a second goal early in the third period. Lyman earned her second point of the game at 5:11 with another assist, this time as Alexa Aramburu buried her third score of the year.
The Laker’s were not done, however, adding one more goal three minutes later. At 8:49, Emma Smetaniuk cashed in her fourth score of the year without any assistance.
Oswego will return to the ice and to the Campus Center after a four-game road trip at 7 p.m. on Friday night against Elmira College.
