The Lancaster/Iroquois Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Team will advance to the semi-finals of the WNY Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Federation playoffs after defeating Amherst/Sweet Home (Katz) 5-2 at Northtown Center last night (Thursday, Jan. 29)
Lancaster opened the scoring at 4:56 of the first period with a goal by Turcotte, assisted by Nobles and Weppner. (Sorry girls, I don’t have a roster with full names). At 5:25 Colucci put in Lancaster’s second but at 20:48 Amherst/Sweet Home’s Renee Lauer dropped in an unassisted goal and ended the first period 2-1 in favor of Lancaster/Iroquois.
The second period scoring was opened by Katz when Captain McKenna Rushford got one past Maddy Norton at the 2:05 mark, assisted by Samantha Czora and McKenna Witkowski. Both Lancaster and Katz had their first penalities of the game, tripping and interference, respectively and the period ended 2-2.
The tie didn’t remain long into the third period when Lancaster/Iroquois Renault dropped in an unassisted goal and it turned out to be the winner. Nobles and another player put in one each to secure the 5-2 victory.
Lancaster/Iroquois now moves on to play Williamsville in the semi-finals on Monday, February 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Northtown Center, Amherst.
The West Seneca/Hamburg vs Orchard Park/Frontier game postponed Thursday due to weather at Orchard Park will be played Friday (Jan. 30) at 5:30 p.m. at West Seneca. The winner of that game will move on to play defending champion Kenmore at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2.
The Section VI championship game will be played Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 8 p. . at Northtown Center, Amherst. The winner of that game will go on to the New York State Championships being held at HarborCenter, Buffalo on February 6 and 7.

Section III has Alexander Bay/Thousand Islands taking on Skaneateles (last year’s NYS Co-Champion) this weekend.
Section VII is Beekmantown facing off against Albany Academies and at Section X its Potsdam I(NYS Co-Champion) facing Massena.
Tickets for the NYS Championships are $6 for Friday’s semi-final games at 6 and 8 p.m. and $6 for the Championship game on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.
