SYRACUSE, N.Y. – As the clock ticked down in the third period, Syracuse women’s hockey team found themselves down, 2-1, to No. 4 Clarkson at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday night. With just under two minutes left in regulation, the Golden Knights looked to attack inside of Orange territory, but a loose puck was won by Alysha Burriss. She raced down to the other end, beating the Clarkson goaltender, scoring the game-tying goal.
Both teams did not score in overtime, resulting in a 2-2 tie. Syracuse moves to 5-7-5 on the season, while Clarkson is now 14-3-4.
Earlier in the game, Heather Schwarz gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead with a goal nearly six minutes into the first period. Later in the period, Clarkson scored the equalizer and then went ahead in the second period, 2-1.
Goaltender Abbey Miller had 20 saves in the contest. Miller and the Orange defense held the nation’s second highest scoring offense to two goals. The Golden Knights have averaged 3.75 goals this season. Clarkson has not scored less than three goals since Oct. 15 against No. 1 Wisconsin, a 4-1 loss.
Schwarz has scored eight goals on the season, the most on the team. Burriss is the team’s points leader with 12 (five goals, seven assists). Allie Munroe recorded an assist on Schwarz’s goal in the first period. She now has registered at least one point in three-straight games.
Syracuse and Clarkson will play again tomorrow in Potsdam, N.Y. at 4 p.m.
