Morrisville, NY- The Utica College women’s hockey team used two goals in the final three minutes of play to down host Morrisville State 3-2 in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Pioneers snap Morrisville’s nine-game winning streak to start the season. UC improves to 4-4 on the year, while the Mustangs drop to 9-1. The teams return to action Saturday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium for the Pioneers’ fifth annual gold ribbon game for childhood cancer awareness.
Morrisville opened the scoring at 8:06 of the first period as Jessica Ujcik netted her second of the year, assisted by Renee Stevenson.
The Pioneers responded just over two minutes later as freshman Olivia Hirschy (Fort Wayne, IN/Culver Academies) put in a rebound for her third goal of the year. Senior Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) tallied the only assist on the play.
Morrisville scored the only goal of the second period as Ujcik netted her second of the game, assisted by Stevenson and Kim Hughes.
The Pioneers tied the game with just 2:51 remaining in regulation as junior Taylor Osowski (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects) was able to knock home a loose puck in front for her third of the year. Veronique Lorite and Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) assisted on the play.
Then, just 1:09 later, sophomore Jennifer Liu (North Saanich, British Columbia/Shaftesbury Titans ) put in her first of the year off assists from Schnepp and classmate Kayla Dion (Colchester, VT/Boston Shamrocks ) to give the Pioneers their first lead of the game.
Junior Amanda Lupo (Auburn, NY/Skaneateles) had 19 saves to pick up her first win of the season, while Renee Schmaltz made 32 saves in the loss.
