BY RANDY SCHULTZ –AMHERST, NY – Kenmore/Grand Island may have scored the opening goal of the game, but it was all Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew after that. LID defeated KGI, 6-1 Thursday night in a quarterfinal playoff game of the Section VI Western New York Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Federation played at the Northtown Center.
Jersey Phillips lead the way for the victors scoring four goals.
Nina Stockman opened the scoring for KGI with an unassisted goal at the 4:30 mark of the opening period. Less than two minutes later LID tied the game, 1-1, on a goal by Jeanette Szefler with assists going to Sara O’Donnell and Morgan Zaccaarine.
Phillips scored the first of her four goals on the evening at the 7:48 mark to put her team ahead for good. Bethany Horvatis assisted.
Horvatis came right back at the 10:48 mark of that opening period with a goal of her own to give LID a 3-1 lead. Morganne Dee and Szefler assisted.
Phillips rounded out the scoring in the first period with her second goal, an unassisted one, of the night at the 12:03 mark.
Following a scoreless second period, Phillips tallied her third goal of the game at 9:35 of the third period to give LID a commanding 5-1 lead. She added her fourth and final goal of the night just four minutes later into an empty net to make the final, 6-1. LID goaltender Sophia Will assisted on the final goal.
