Behind a great game by Mike Heffernan, who had one goal and two assists, New Hampshire defeated Lockport, 5-2.
Heffernan beat Tyler Shotwell with a shot 16:52 into the first period on the power play to make the score 1-0 New Hampshire. New Hampshire had gotten the advantage when Lockport’s Christian Whitcomb was sent off for slashing. Nick Pino picked up the assist. Heffernan dished an assist on David Fish’s goal that made the score 3-0 New Hampshire at 14:01 into the second period. He added another helper on Pino’s goal that made the score 5-2 New Hampshire at 13:10 into the third period.
Lockport’s 13 penalties came back to haunt it, as Lockport let up five goals while on the penalty kill.
New Hampshire was often in penalty trouble, totaling 12 minors and one major for 49 minutes in penalty time. New Hampshire surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. New Hampshire’s penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Lockport power plays. New Hampshire kept Lockport’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Shotwell made 50 saves on 55 shots. New Hampshire’s defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.
New Hampshire also got points from Fish, who also had one goal and one assist and Pino, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Ryan Dunfield also scored for New Hampshire. More assists for New Hampshire came via Alex Peddle and Chris Babineau, who contributed one each.
Lockport’s penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and four majors for 68 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game Lockport had been spending in the box. Lockport could not produce up to its normal offensive output. Lockport puts an average of 5.0 pucks into the net per game.
Lockport was helped by Mark Friol, who registered one goal. Friol scored short handed 12:24 into the third period to make the score 4-2 New Hampshire. Lockport was on a disadvantage when Jacob Burford went off the ice for roughing. Peter Guido provided the assist. Lockport also got a goal from Christopher Gasiewicz as well. In addition, Lockport received assists from Justin Durkee, who had one.
Claes Endre recorded 22 saves for New Hampshire.
