New York had a four-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over Lockport.
New York got the win with help from a great game by Daniel Backstrom, who had two goals and one assist. Backstrom scored the first of his two goals at 11:27 into the first period to make the score 2-0 New York. Robert Kalata assisted on the tally. Backstrom’s next tally made the score 3-0 New York with 18:26 left in the second period. Eric Hewitt picked up the assist.
New York was led by goalie Stephen Mundinger, who finished with 56 saves while allowing one goal. Mundinger certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.59 entering the contest.
New York’s penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Lockport power plays. New York kept Lockport’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Sal Stalteri made 59 saves on 64 shots.
New York additionally got points from Kalata, who also registered one goal and one assist and Nick Jean-Louis, who also had one goal and one assist. New York also got a goal from Jimmy Warrick as well. In addition, New York received assists from Sam Shaheen and Phillip Garcia, who contributed one each.
Lockport was held below its usual level of production. Lockport puts an average of 4.2 pucks into the net per game. Lockport forced New York goalie Mundinger to work between the pipes, taking 57 shots. Lockport was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time.
New York incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with 12 minors.
