Manhattanville Takes Hobart 4-3

Hobart College senior Robert Sovik (Prague, Czech Republic) scored an extra-attacker goal in the final minute to cut the deficit to one, but the Statesmen fell 4-3 to Manhattanville in an ECAC West game played tonight at the Valiants’ Playland Ice Casino.

 

Hobart is now 1-2-0 this season. It was Manhattanville’s season opener. Seven Statesmen earned a point in tonight’s game. Matt Coleman scored a goal and earned two assists, and Paul Allan Bamberg chipped in a goal and an assist in the win for the Valiants. Brian Fleming played all 60 minutes in goal for Manhattanville and made 25 saves. Junior Lino Chimienti played 58:38 in goal for Hobart and stopped 24 shots.

 

Teegan Waugh put Manhattanville up 1-0 4:58 in the first period off assists from Phil Dinner and Coleman. The Statesmen then jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first 2:12 of the second period. Senior Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Colo.) found the back of the net off an assist from junior Bo Webster (Aurora, Ontario) just1:52 into the second stanza. First-year Tyler Wolf (Naperville, Ill.) scored his second goal of the season 20 seconds later. Sophomore Nick Bingaman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) set up the play. At 8:07, Allan Bamberg tied things up for the Valiants at 2-2. Coleman earned the assist.

 

Manhattanville notched two power-play goals in the third period to stretch its lead to 4-2. Coleman struck first at 4:34 after passes from Eric McClure and Bamberg. Stephen Gaul then sent home a shot after a feed from Anton Racklin at 12:03.

 

The Statesmen pulled Chimienti in the final minutes of regulation, and were able to take advantage of the extra attacker once, pulling within one with 39 seconds remaining on Sovik’s goal. Sophomore Jon Neal (Encinitas, Calif.) and seniorRyan Michel (Camillus, N.Y.) were credited with the assists.

 

Each team notched 28 shots in the game. The Statesmen went 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Valiants went 3-for 7.
