MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Senior Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon) scored her first goal of the season and freshman goaltender Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) made 33 saves but it was not enough, as the Manhattanville College women’s ice hockey team dropped a game to NEHC foe Salve Regina Friday evening.
The Valiants (1-2-0 overall, 1-2-0 NEHC) suffered their second conference loss of the season after allowing five goals to the Seahawks (3-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 NEHC). The young Manhattanville lineup battled against a strong Salve Regina team, registering 18 shots on goal, but able to capitalize on just one of those opportunities.
The Seahawks jumped out on top early, scoring the game’s first goal just 2:49 into the first period on a goal from Danielle Phalon. They added to that lead 35 seconds into the second period, when Phalon capitalized on a power play for her second goal of the night.
Manhattanville cut the deficit in half just two minutes later, taking advantage of their own power play when Herbert was able to beat Seahawk goaltender Colleen Marcik. The Valiants were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way, with Salve Regina tacking on three more insurance goals to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore Sarah Sinning (Southold, NY/National Sports Academy) tied for a game-high in shots with seven on goal. Classmate Monika Molnar (Budapest, Hungary/Vasas HC) was also able to record three shots on goal on the night.
The Valiants return home to Playland Ice Casino Saturday night for their home-opener against conference opponent UMass Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
