RYE, N.Y. – Five different players recorded goals and two freshmen recorded their first collegiate points as the Manhattanville College women’s hockey team knocked off Lebanon Valley for the second time in less than 24 hours Sunday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino, 5-0.
Senior Morgan Wilm (West Chester, Pa./Millbrook School) started the scoring Sunday afternoon less than 90 seconds in off assists from junior Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Plattsburgh) and freshman Ashley DeFusco (Cranston, R.I./New England Hockey Club); DeFusco’s assist was her first collegiate point. Wilm’s goal was the only mark of the period for Manhattanville (4-3-0, 2-2-0 UCHC, 2-0-0 MAC) despite a 25-0 shot advantage.
The Valiants’ relentless attack repeatedly broke through in the second period Sunday, just like it did in their three-goal second period Saturday night. First, it was Mensi, who scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season exactly 90 seconds in off assists from Wilm and fellow senior Maeve O’Brien (Chicago, Ill./Chicago Fury). Freshman Madison Gneo (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) scored her first collegiate goal, shorthanded, 1:03 later off an assist from senior Kristi Peters (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks). Senior Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./The Kent School) added her first goal of the season, also shorthanded, 28 seconds after Gneo’s mark off assists from freshman Adelle Clark (Lantzville, British Columbia/Ontario Hockey Academy) and sophomore Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride); Clark’s assist was her first collegiate point. Senior Sarah Sinning (Southold, N.Y./National Sports Academy), who recorded her second career hat trick in Saturday’s 7-1 win, added her fourth goal of the weekend and fifth of the season on the power play at 6:20 off assists from Mensi and senior Monika Molnar (Budapest, Hungary/Vasas HC) for Manhattanville’s fourth goal of the period and final goal of the afternoon.
Jill Moffat finished with 31 saves for Lebanon Valley (2-4-2, 1-2-1 UCHC, 1-2-1 MAC) before being pulled after Sinning’s goal, finishing the two games with 99 saves in less than 75 minutes of action. Victoria Lahey played well in relief for the second straight game, not allowing a goal while stopping 33 shots; Lahey finished the weekend with 46 saves in 46 minutes of action.
Manhattanville returns to Playland Ice Casino Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-conference showdown with Connecticut College in the team’s final game of 2017.
