ELMSFORD, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women’s hockey team picked up their second-straight win against United Collegiate Hockey Conference opponent Wilkes University, Saturday, March 6. Three different Valiants scored in the 3-1 home victory and sophomore goalie Franny Gerardi (Yonkers, N.Y./Selects Academy) made 26 saves on 27 shots.
After a scoreless first period, the Valiants (2-4) got on the board just 42 seconds into the second period thanks to a power play goal from sophomore forward Morgan Miller (St. Augustine, Fla./Gilmour Academy). Junior defender Tia Martignetti (Wilmington, Mass./Boston Junior Eagles (EHF)) assisted on the play. Manhattanville then extended their lead to two less than one minute later. Senior forward Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) found the stick of senior forward Adelle Clark (Lantzville, B.C./Ontario Hockey Academy) who buried the puck into the back of net. Senior forward Taylor Ham (Saugerties, N.Y./Millbrook School) was credited with the second assist on the play.
The Colonels (0-4) notched one goal in the second to cut the Valiant lead to start the third period. The 2-1 score held for majority of the final period. Wilkes went on the power play with 2:07 left in the game and looked to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Colonels pulled their goalie to take a two-man advantage, but Manhattanville closed the door on a comeback thanks to an empty net goal from junior defender Holly Meredith (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Vermont Academy). Gerardi was credited with the assist on the final goal.
The Valiants return to the ice next weekend on Friday, March 12. They travel to Utica, N.Y., to face Nazareth College at a neutral site. Puck drop is set for 2:00 P.M.
