ANNVILLE, PA. – Senior Marco Ferraro (Toronto, Ont./St. Michael’s Buzzers (OJHL)) of the Manhattanville College men’s ice hockey team was selected as the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Men’s Hockey Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The MAC selects one player in each sport to receive the annual award, which recognizes one senior student-athlete among all the competing teams from both the MAC Freedom and Commonwealth schools in his or her sport. This senior combines excellence both in competition and in the classroom. To be considered for the award, a senior must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) and must contribute meaningfully to his or her team in competition. The winner is determined based half on academic record and athletic achievements.
Ferraro is the 10th Manhattanville student-athlete to earn this honor from the MAC, and the fifth in the last year – four Valiant student-athletes won the award last season (a school record), beginning with Ferraro’s former teammate Thimmy Garbenius(Nykvarn, Sweden/Sodertalje SK (SWE)) last winter.
On the ice, Ferraro played in all 32 games on the blueline for the Valiants, led the team with a plus-19 and 44 blocked shots and was third on Manhattanville with 30 points and 21 assists. The senior defenseman was previously named the 2018-19 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, as well as First Team All-MAC and First Team All-UCHC (United Collegiate Hockey Conference). Ferraro was first among all MAC defensemen in goals (9) and second in points (30) and assists (21). In 85 career games with the Valiants, Ferraro amassed 48 points, including 13 goals and 35 assists.
Off the ice, Ferraro is a two-time American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American Scholar who has achieved a 3.97 cumulative GPA over the previous seven semesters as a finance and economics double major and computer science minor.
Ferraro and the conference’s other Senior Scholar-Athletes will be recognized by the MAC Presidents and Athletic Directors with a special reception and lunch at the MAC’s annual meeting Tuesday, May 7, host at Alvernia University in Reading, Pa.
