MARSHFIELD, Mass. – A six point week for sophomore Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Plattsburgh) helped her earn her first career New England Hockey Conference Player of the Week distinction, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Mensi helped guide the Manhattanville College women’s ice hockey team to a 2-1 week, defeating Lebanon Valley College and Nichols College on the road while dropping a tough matchup to UMass-Boston at home.
For the Week, the local product scored four goals and tallied two assists on 13 shots. She currently leads the Valiants in goals with 11 on the year and ranks tenth nationally among Division II/III players in goals per game with 0.85 tallies per contest.
Mensi began the week with a goal and an assist on two shots in a 10-0 win over Lebanon Valley College Tuesday evening. Her goal was the third short-handed goal of the game for Manhattanville, capping off a new program record for short-handed goals in a single contest.
Continuing her scoring trend, Mensi scored two brilliant goals against UMass-Boston Friday in a tough 3-2 loss where the Valiants outshot the Beacons 42-18. Mensi got the scoring started for the Valiants with a power-play goal from the slot before adding another goal early in the second period, fighting off a defender on a one-on-one opportunity after a two-line pass from freshman Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride).
To cap off the week, Mensi helped guide the Valiants to a 5-1 victory over NEHC opponent Nichols College. She recorded an assist on the Valiants third goal of the contest before tallying her fourth goal of the week late in the third period to cap off her six-point output over the three contests.
Mensi and the Valiants return to action tomorrow when they host Trinity College in a non-conference battle Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm at Playland Ice Casino.
