ORONO, ME – Junior defenseman Caitlyn McLaren netted her third goal of the season as the Union College women’s hockey team lost to University of Maine 3-1 in Orono, ME on Saturday afternoon.
After a 2-1 Maine win on Friday, the Dutchwomen and Black Bears played the final game of the two game series on Saturday (Dec. 10).
Union controlled much of the action in the first period. After 20 minutes of play the game remained 0-0 with Maine having a 10-7 shot advantage while Union had a 11-9 advantage on faceoffs.
The game would not reamin scoreless for long into the second period as Tereza Vanisova beat Kate Spooner to break the deadlock at 7:24 mark. Like the night before, Union would tie the game right before the third. While on the powerplay, a shot from Emily Erickson kicked off the left pad of Maine goalie Carly Jackson. While charging toward the open net, the puck found the tape of McLaren who slotted it in the back of the net with just 22 seconds remaining before the end of the second period.
Just like the first game of the series, it was 1-1 after two periods. Once again, it was Maine who broke the tie as Vanisova scored for the second time in the game at the 4:18 mark of the final period.
Six minutes later, Vanisova would pick up her third point of the game this time via the assist as she and Nicole Arnold combined to find Vendula Pribylova for the Black Bears third and final goal of the game.
Union is back on the ice next Friday (Dec. 16) and Saturday (Dec. 17) as they host Minnesota St.-Mankato. Last season, the Dutchwomen went 0-1-1 against the Mavericks in Makato, MN.
