The WNYGVIH Section VI Quarterfinals started out with a historic moment Thursday night when Amherst/SweetHome/Clarence’s (Katz) Julia Mings scored her 100th career goal.
Mings came into the game with 95 goals and managed to score four, three in the third perod, before her 100th and the Katz tenth hit the net. She scored at 13:35 of the third period.
The team knew Mings had a chance at scoring her 100th, so Coach Nicola Adimey decided to keep on her on the ice during the final minutes of the game to make history. Mings had a seven point night with 5 goals and 2 assists. After regular season play, Mings tied for first place in points with teammate Emma Faso. Both have 42 points, Mings with 24 goals and 18 assists; Faso with 20 goals and 22 assists.
The Katz beat Lancaster/Iroquois/Depew 10-4 and move on to face Orchard Park/Frontier/Lake Shore in the Semi-Finals Monday (Feb. 6) at 5:30 p.m.
In the second game of the Quarterfinals Kenmore/Grand Island beat West Seneca/Hamburg/Eden 2-1 with just seconds left in the game.

The teams tied it up 1-1 in the second period and it remained that way until 14:38 of the third period when Smith assistd by Hannah Gallivan and Victoria Botticello put the puck in the net.
Kenmore now faces #1 Williamsville in the Semi-finals on Monday (Feb. 2) at 4 p.m. at the NorthTowns Center, Amherst.
The winners of those two games will face each other for the Section VI championship on Wednesday, February 8. The 2016-17 Section VI champion will head to Canton (NY) to play in the New York State Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Championships on February 10 and 11. Section VI will face Section VII in the preliminary round.
