BY RANDY SCHULTZ – AMHERST, NY — Kayla Blas scored two goal and assisted on two others to lead the Monsignor Martin (MM) girls varsity hockey team past Hamburg/Eden/West Seneca (HEWS), 5-1. This was the first of three WNYGVIHF quarterfinal playoff games played Tuesday at the Northtown Center to determine a girls high school champion.
Following a scoreless first period Blas opened the scoring for MM at 1:35 of the second period. Kierra Hayes tied the score for HEWS just seven minutes later, with an assist going to Sarah Waszkielewicz.
Blas put MM ahead for good at 10:23 of the second with her second unassisted goal of the game. MM made it 3-1 at 12:06 with Blas and Ellie Cleary assisting. Izzy Friedman closed out the scoring for MM in the second with Blas and Emily Matthew assisting at 14:15 to make it 4-1.
Alexa Groh rounded out the scoring for MM at 6:54 of the third period with Kayla Kasprzak assisting.
MM outshot HEWS, 41-11 for the game. Adriana Harman stopped 36 shots for HEWS.
