Kaitlyn O’Donohoe scored 2:49 into overtime to lead fifth-ranked Colgate to a 1-0 win over the St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team in an ECAC Hockey contest on Sunday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
O’Donohoe one-timed a pass from Tanner Gates into the back of the net, with Nemo Neubauerova picking up the secondary assist in the 3-on-3 overtime period.
Despite the loss, St. Lawrence earned a point for taking the Raiders to overtime for the second straight game; Colgate beat the Saints 3-2 in overtime on Friday in Hamilton.
Lucy Morgan made a career-high 37 saves for the Saints, while Kayle Osborne stopped 21 shots in the shutout for the Raiders, who improved to 10-1-1 overall and 6-0-0 in ECAC Hockey.
“We played another hard-fought game versus one of the most skilled teams in the country today,” said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells ’92. “Both goalies were outstanding. We hung on for every breath in the second period and we were able to find some wind in the third. Two excellent games for us to play this early in the season. Our new players learned a lot this weekend playing Colgate.”
Colgate dominated the first few minutes of the first period, building a 7-1 lead in shots on goal, but the Saints outplayed the Raiders in the second half of the period to head to the locker room trailing just 14-11 in shots on goal.
The Raiders had the better of the play for most of the second period, but the Saints limited Colgate to just eight shots on goal and Morgan was up to the task on every shot that she faced. Coralie Larose had Colgate’s best scoring chance, but rang a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot off the far post with less than eight minutes remaining in the period.
While St. Lawrence was outshot 14-5 in the third, the Saints had several chances to score, but Osborne preserved the shutout with a number of dazzling saves, including a sprawling stop on a breakaway bid by Taylor Lum.
Morgan, however, matched Osborne’s third-period performance, making a beautiful pad save on a give-and-go shot by Darcie Lappan, moving from her left to stop a shot at the right post to preserve the tie and send the game into overtime.
The Saints, now 0-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in ECAC Hockey play, will host RIT for a non-league game on Tuesday at 4 p.m., then head to Hamden, Connecticut, to face Quinnipiac for a pair of ECAC Hockey games on Saturday and Sunday.
“We can’t thank our administrators enough for giving us the opportunity to play,” said Wells. “We get to do what we love to do and our players have responded with great efforts since our return.”
