MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women’s Ice Hockey team battled out a 1-1 draw on Friday night in a non-conference match up with the Ravens from Franklin Pierce University.
The visiting Ravens and the home Mustangs both struggled to get their offense going, managing just 12 shots between them in the entire first period.
Franklin Pierce was the first to turn the corner in the second, posting the first goal of the game at the 3:34 mark in the second period. Marissa Massaro picked up her second goal of the season for the Ravens when she cut in toward the net from the left, receiving a pass from Kelsey Ryan. Massaro made a move around a Morrisville defender and flipped the puck top right to give Franklin Pierce the 1-0 advantage.
Both teams were put in positions to score throughout the second period as the referees whistled six penalties. Neither team was able to capitalize on their power play attempts as both goal tenders came up with big saves.
Even though the Mustangs could not capitalize on their power plays, they did capitalize out of transition late in the second period. Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ont.) broke up a Ravens’ pass as time expired on the Morrisville penalty kill, finding Shanley Austin (Rochester, N.Y.) at mid-ice. Austin then found a streaking Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who split the awaiting two Raven defenders, rifling her shot past the Franklin Pierce goaltender for the equalizer. Both Lark and Austin were credited with assists on the play.
The Mustangs turned things up a notch in the third, outshooting the Ravens 12-7, but it was not enough as the game headed into overtime.
Overtime would not be kind to either squad as the teams settled for the 1-1 tie.
Morrisville will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Franklin Pierce in the second game of their non-conference series. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 PM.
