MORRISVILLE, N.Y.-Morrisville State (10-2) topped the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (5-5) 2-1 in a nonconference contest on Tuesday night. Junior forward Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Team Detroit) scored for the Bears and freshman goalie Nicole Whitesell (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) made 30 saves.
The Mustangs started quickly and never trailed. Vanessa Klimpke scored 33 seconds into the contest. Morrisville outshot Potsdam 9-7 in the opening period and the Bears were unable to capitalize on their lone power play.
The Mustangs pressured the Bears during the middle period, firing 14 shots on Whitesell. However, the goaltender stopped each attempt to keep her team down just 1-0 after 40 minutes.
Morr tied the game just 31 seconds into the final period. About eight minutes later, Klimpke netted the game-winner. The Bears went on the power play again with 1:15 remaining and pulled Whitesell for an extra attacker, but couldn’t draw even.
Renee Schmaltz made 18 saves to earn the victory.
Potsdam wraps up the semester with two home games against New England College this weekend. The Bears face the Pilgrims at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
