ROCHESTER, N.Y. — (Photo compliments of Nazareth) – Playing its second game in as many days Saturday, Nazareth battled to a 2-2 tie with visiting Brockport in men’s hockey at the Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex.
The Golden Flyers got a third-period goal from junior Oliver Janzen to even the score and move their record to 0-1-1. Nazareth opened its 2016-17 campaign Friday with a 3-2 loss to Geneseo. Brockport is 0-0-1.
After Janzen’s goal, each team had chances to win the game. Nazareth failed on a power play opportunity later in the third period, then Brockport was unsuccessful with a two-man advantage that bridged the end of the third period with overtime. Nazareth goalie Brandon Lane was whistled for a tripping penalty with 48 second left in regulation and then David Powlowski was called for interference with just :01 left.
Nazareth successfully killed Brockport’s 5-on-3 power play chance. Nazareth had a power play chance of its own in overtime as Brockport’s Zac Sikich was called for charging. The Golden Flyers played the final 1:26 with a man advantage, but failed to score.
The teams exchanged power play goals in the first two periods. Brockport scored just five minutes into the opening period after Matt Manzella was called for interference, Doc Gentzler scored off assists from Ryan Kangas and Nick Palumbo. Nazareth tied the score early in the second period after a penalty to Brockport’s Connor Bass. Senior Dominik Gabaj scored his first goal of the season off assists from Janzen and Manzella.
In the third period, Luke Bennett scored for Brockport just 1:46 into the frame, but Janzen tied it at 9:44 as he backhanded a shot past Brockport goalie Cole Burack after receiving a pass from freshman Cody Antonini, playing in his first game.
Brockport had a 41-33 edge in shots and won 37 of 67 face-offs. Lane totaled 39 saves for Nazareth with Burack stopping 31 shots for Brockport.
Nazareth opens its ECAC West schedule next weekend with home games Friday and Saturday against Manhattanville and Neumann respectively.
