ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Senior Oliver Janzen netted the game-winning goal in the second period off a power play and added another extra man goal in the third to help Nazareth open the season with a 5-2 win over Cortland Friday night in non-conference action at the Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex.
With the win, Nazareth moves to 1-0 overall, while Cortland falls to 0-1.
“It’s always great to get started with a win at home,” said Nazareth Coach George Roll, now in his sixth season with the Golden Flyers. “I thought we worked pretty hard and took advantage of our chances — especially on the power play.”
The Golden Flyers converted three of their six power play chances, including both of Janzen’s goals. With the score tied at 2-2 after the first period, Janzen netted his first power play goal of the game to help Nazareth re-gain the lead. Janzen received a cross-ice diagonal pass from Alex Corvi and five-holed the Cortland goaltender with a one-timer. J.R. Wojciechowski also assisted.
Janzen netted an ever-important goal in the third on the power play near the midway point. Austin Romzek threaded a cross-ice pass to Janzen for a wrist shot to beat the goalie short side. Matt Manzella also gained an assist.
Cortland kept pressure up late into the game, hitting the post with under four minutes to play, but was unable to find another goal.
Nazareth wasted little time to find the net scoring just :44 seconds into the game. Ryan Walter ripped a shot from the point and Brian Miller knocked in a deflection in front to make it 1-0.
The Red Dragons capitalized on a power play goal by Paul Fregeau at 7:24, evening the score at 1-1.
Walter put the Golden Flyers back on top at the midway point of the opening period, roofing a shot into the top left corner as he skated down the center of the ice.
Cortland and Nazareth went into the first intermission even at 2-2, following a goal from the Red Dragons’ Alex Storjohann with six minutes left in the period.
After Janzen’s power play tally in the third period, Nazareth had to kill off a Cortland power play. With time winding down in the game, Nazareth scored yet another power play goal as James McDonald finished off a pass in front from Mateo Capriotti for the Golden Flyers’ fifth goal. John Power also gained an assist.
Michael Tillford earned the win in goal for the Golden Flyers by making 34 saves, including 24 over the last two periods, while keeping Cortland off the scoreboard. Cortland had a 36-29 edge in shots.
