HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team swept the weekend series with Elmira College with a 6-3 victory on Saturday night at the Soaring Eagles’ Murray Athletic Center. Oswego never trailed in the contest – a day after thrashing Elmira 7-1 at home – scoring three third-period goals to put the game away.
In the tilt, Oswego outshot the Soaring Eagles 41-29 and scored a shorthanded goal for the second-straight night. Freshman Jody Sullivan tallied the second goal of his career at 7:49 of the second period as the Lakers were down a skater for a boarding penalty. This came a night after senior Kenny Neil opened the season with a shorty in the first period.
Neil was not satisfied with his one goal and one assist Friday night, so he recorded a hat-trick in Saturday’s victory. The captain scored in the final two minutes of the first period to put Oswego on top 2-0. After Elmira made it a one-goal margin at 4-3 in the third, Neil posted two tallies in the final five minutes of the contest to secure the triumph. Classmate Shawn Hulshof assisted on both goals, with fellow senior Alex Botten recording a secondary assist on the first of the two scores.
It was not the only time that Hulshof and Botten were on the same page, as the teammates connected at 16:33 of the opening period to earn Oswego its first lead of the game at 1-0 on a Hulshof wrister.
The other Laker goal on the night just happened to represent the game-winner, as Botten collected his third point of the night by assisting Matt Galati for his second of the year at 1:14 of the third on a power-play.
Sophomore transfer David Jacobson started for the first time as a Laker against Elmira, stopping 26 Soaring Eagles’ attempts for the victory.
Oswego returns to the ice at 7 p.m. on Friday at Brockport to open the conference slate. The next night, men’s ice hockey will host Geneseo at 7 p.m. on Homecoming Weekend.
