Hockey Dinner Scheduled For Sept. 30

 

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara University will host an evening to support the Purple Eagles hockey program on Sept. 30 at the Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, N.Y. Anyone interested in supporting Niagara hockey is encouraged to attend this great event.

 

Niagara University Director of Athletics Simon Gray, along with hockey head coach Dave Burkholder, will welcome guest speakers Doug MacLean, veteran NHL head coach, GM and analyst, and Niagara hockey alum Dr. Jon Marshall (’00).

MacLean, a hockey analyst for Sportsnet’s HOCKEY CENTRAL since 2008, coached the NHL’s Florida Panthers for three seasons including leading them to the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals while being named Hockey News Coach of the Year. In 1998, MacLean was named President and General Manger of the new expansion franchise, the Columbus Blue Jackets. During his nine-year tenure with the Blue Jackets organization, he was named the Businessman of the Year and was inducted into the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Dr. Marshall, a local radiologist, was part of Niagara’s inaugural men’s hockey class and wore the purple and white from 1996-2000.  As a senior, he helped Niagara to a 30-8-4 overall record, a 15-0-2 conference record and a 2000 College Hockey America Tournament title en route to defeating New Hampshire in the 2000 NCAA Tournament First Round. His unwavering work ethic and commitment to the program led the coaching staff to name him captain for three straight years.  His grit and passion for the game led to the creation of the Dr. Jon Marshall Award given each year to the most dedicated player.

 

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will start at 5:30 p.m. with dinner beginning at6:30 p.m. followed by the program.  The cost is $100 per person and $800 per table of eight which includes public recognition. Please R.S.V.P. by Sept. 24 to Jennifer Ebbole at 716-286-8600 to secure your spot.

 

Niagara, which advanced to the 2014 AHA Tournament Semifinals, returns 23 student-athletes including AHA All-Rookie team selection defenseman Vincent Muto and three-time AHA Rookie of the Week award winner goalie Jackson Teichroeb.

 

After hosting an exhibition game against Brock on Sunday, Oct. 5, the 2014-15 regular season begins at Dwyer Arena against Clarkson University onFriday, Oct. 10 and St. Lawrence on Saturday, Oct. 11.
