Hobart College hockey senior Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) notched a hat trick and added an assist, and first-year Tanner Shaw (Toronto, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal with 1:53 left in regulation for a 5-3 Statesmen win at Nazareth tonight. Hobart, ranked No. 13 by D3hockey.com, improves to 3-1-1 and 3-0-0 in conference play.
Shaw’s game winner was his first collegiate goal. Senior Brad Robbins (Murrieta, Calif.) added a goal and an assist in the win. Senior goalie Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) played all 60 minutes and made 24 saves. Nazareth falls to 0-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the ECAC West.
Olson opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the game. Robbins gave Hobart a 2-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season just 24 seconds into the second period. Senior Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) and Olson set up the play.
Nazareth responded with back-to-back goals to tie the game up at 2-2. David Powlowski found the back of the net on a power play after passes from Brad Pizzey and Ryan Walter 7:07 into the second. Pizzey notched a goal of his own 2:44 later. Scott Dawson was credited with the assist. With 3:27 left in the middle period, Olson registered his second goal of the game , a shorthanded tally, to put Hobart up 3-2. Junior Nick Bingaman (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) earned the assist. Oliver Janzen tied the game up for a second time for the Golden Flyers with 1:57 left in the middle period. John Power earned an assist.
With just 1:53 left in regulation, Shaw secured the win for Hobart after passes from sophomore Jordan Haskell (Tooele, Utah) and first-year Trevor Poirier (St. Albert/Alberta). The Golden Knights pulled their goalie, Ed Zdolshek, for the final minute of play for an extra skater, looking to tie the game up for a third time. Instead Olson scored an empty net goal with 31 seconds left in the game. He leads Hobart with seven goals and nine points this season. Zdolshek finished with 23 saves for Nazareth.
The Statesmen finished with a slight 28-27 advantage in shots. The Golden Flyers went 1-for-6 on the power play, while Hobart was 0-for-5.
The Statesmen are back in action tomorrow, Nov. 14, when they travel to take on Utica in another ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
