Hobart College junior goaltender Frank Oplinger (Sewickley, Pa.) was named the ECAC West Men’s Hockey Goalie of the Week as announced by the conference office this afternoon. In addition, the Statesmen were voted No. 8 in the nation in both the D3hockey.com and USCHO.com polls this week.
Oplinger played all 60 minutes of regulation in a 2-1 overtime victory over Skidmore on Friday night. He turned aside a total of 29 shots including all 18 shots he faced in the first two periods. Oplinger is sporting a .917 save percentage and a 2.18 goals against average in six games this season. He ranks second in the ECAC West in save percentage and third in goals against average.
The Statesmen went 2-0-1 in three non-conference games last week. Hobart is 7-2-2 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play. The Statesmen lead the ECAC West and rank 20th in the nation in scoring defense allowing an average of 2.55 goals per game. Hobart also ranks first in the conference and fifth in the country on the penalty kill, denying 51 of its opponents’ 56 power-play chances (91.1%).
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 9, when they host Trinity (Conn.) for another non-league contest in The Cooler at 7 p.m.
