OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team played to a 4-4 overtime tie with visiting Brockport on Friday night at the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the tie, the nationally-ranked Lakers move to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in SUNYAC action while the Golden Eagles go to 2-4-1, 1-2-1.
Oswego faced its first deficit since the opening game of the 2014-15 campaign at Buffalo State when Brockport notched a goal 6:14 into the first period. The Lakers would fight back and hold three other leads during the game but could not secure the win.
After going to the locker room trailing 1-0, Oswego came out firing in the second period. Its first goal came just 1:29 into the stanza when Mike Wills blasted a shot from just within the blue line to beat the Golden Eagles’ goalie for a score. Wills was assisted by Matt Galati and Chris Raguseo.
The team added another just 32 seconds later when Mitchell Herlihey sprinted out for his fifth goal of the season, giving Oswego a 2-1 edge. Just over nine minutes later, Brockport evened the game at 2-2 with a power-play tally. Oswego regained the lead in the next two minutes when Andrew Barton sent a beautiful pass across the crease for a quick strike by Mike Montagna. Chris Waterstreet was credited with the secondary assist on the power-play score that helped the Lakers go up 3-2.
That 3-2 lead held until the final minutes of the third period when a fury of goals happened in a span of less than 1:30. At 14:39, James Ryan from Brockport tied the game at 3-3 with an assist from Dylan Shapiro. Oswego responded with a Krystian Yorke goal just 25 seconds later when David Ferreira and Barton found the sophomore for the go-ahead score.
Brockport notched the game’s final goal just 11 seconds after the Yorke tally, forcing a hard-fought final five minutes of regulation.
In the overtime, Oswego controlled the puck and the pace, taking several good opportunities and out-shooting the Golden Eagles 7-2 in the period. Matt Galati looked to put the game away with the Brockport goalie on his back but the goaltender flung leg at just the right time to make an improbable save.
