GENESEO, N.Y. – A balanced offensive attack throughout the lineup propelled the second-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team (4-0-0, 3-0-0 SUNYAC) past Geneseo (3-2-1, 2-1-1 SUNYAC), 10-1, on Saturday. Ten different skaters across all four lines scored, while Andrew Hare (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) saw his shutout streak end at 138:29 for an all-around performance by the visiting Lakers.
The victory also marks the 800th program win for Oswego State, which is now 800-435-51 over the course of 47 seasons as an NCAA program.
David Titanic (Jr., Markham, Ont.) opened the scoring 4:04 into the first period with assists going to Chris Brown(Sr., Centreville, Ont.) and Matt Singleton (Sr., Whitby, Ont.). Tim Carr (Sr., Burlington, Ont.) tallied his second goal of the season three minutes later after receiving a series of passes from Titanic and Paul Rodrigues (Sr., Etobicoke, Ont.).
Shortly after the Lakers took a 2-0 lead, they capitalized on a Geneseo unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when Jon Whitelaw (Sr., Huntsville, Ont.) buried the puck into the back of the net. Chris Ayotte (Sr., Cornwall, Ont.) andJesse McConney (Sr., Barrie, Ont.) earned assists on the play. However, Oswego State was not finished in the frame, though, as Zach Josepher (Sr., Wantagh, N.Y.) notched his third goal of the year at the 15:53 mark withChris Muise (Sr., Oakville, Ont.) and Bobby Gertsakis (So., Pickering, Ont.) picking up the helpers.
Geneseo got on the board courtesy of a Brandon Angotti goal with five seconds remaining on a Laker tripping call late in the first period to make the score 4-1 at the end of one.
Oswego State quickly squashed any thoughts of a comeback when Rodrigues scored 36 seconds into the second period. McConney and Luke Moodie (Sr., Oakville, Ont.) were credited with assists on the play. By the end of the stanza, Tyler Leimbrock (Sr., Bolton, Ont.) and RJay Berra (So., Prince George, B.C.), who scored his first collegiate goal, added their names to the scoring column to make the scoreboard read 7-1 heading into the third period.
The offense kept rolling in the final frame, as Chris Carr (So., Burlington, N.Y.), Brown, and Ayotte joined the scoring act to account for the final 10-1 score.
Special teams played a key role for both squads, as Lakers went 3-for-6 on the power play compared to Geneseo, which went 1-for-3.
Oswego State goalie Andrew Hare improved to 3-0-0 on the season after making 26 saves, while Adrian Rubeniuk, Bryan Haude, and Nick Horrigan stopped 32 combined shots with Rubeniuk suffering the loss.
The Lakers remain on the road as they play their only game next weekend on Friday at Morrisville with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
