Clarkson’s Shelton Passes Century Mark In Points

0

Potsdam, NY – Senior Ella Shelton recorded her 100th career point and then tacked on a few more for good measure as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team recorded a 5-0 victory over Brown University in ECAC Hockey play Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked seventh in the latest polls, improved to 19-4-6 overall and 10-3-4 in conference games while Brown dropped to 3-19-2 and 2-14-1. Clarkson is back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Green and Gold will look to avenge a loss earlier in the season against the Yale Bulldogs.

It was slow going in the first period for both teams, though Clarkson certainly had the upper hand on offense, outshooting Brown by a total of 28-10 (15-6 shots on goal). Clarkson saw two true chances come away empty midway through the period. Elizabeth Giguere outskated the Brown defense for a loose puck near center ice and gained possession close to the blue line for a short break away, but Calla Isaac made a brilliant sprawling save with her skate to keep the game scoreless. About 90 seconds later the Bears were whistled for a high sticking penalty to put Clarkson on the power play, and though the Knights had six shots in that two-minute span with an extra skater, they came away empty.

That would not be the case at the start of the second period. Brown was called for hooking 50 seconds into the middle frame and Clarkson took no time in taking advantage. Tia Stoddard had the puck near the left circle and switched the angle to Shelton at the opposite side. The senior defenseman then found Giguere near the top of the circle and she slid a shot through traffic at the 1:06 mark to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead.

Both offenses were fairly quiet for the next few minutes, but Clarkson got on the board again at 13:40. Shelton gave up the puck to Giguere on the opposite side of the ice and the junior then passed the puck to Kayla Friesen near the top of the slot. Friesen took a shot, but her attempt was slowed by a Brown defender’s stick. That turned out to work just fine for the Knights as Shelton was cycling into traffic a few feet from that spot and helped the puck regain some momentum by sliding it past Isaac for the goal.

Later in the second period, Brown was on the power play, but Clarkson snuffed out the power play chance and was quickly back to even strength. Tia Stoddard joined the fray off the bench and helped Clarkson in the odd-skater rush as Giguere sent a long pass across the zone to locate Stoddard, who chipped the puck in at 16:13. Shelton also was awarded an assist for starting the play near center ice.

Clarkson tallied early in the third period to put the game away. After a save from Marie-Pier Coulombe, Clarkson and Brown were facing off deep in the Knights’ defensive zone. However, the Green and Gold won the joust and were up ice in no time for a two-on-one. Avery Mitchell found Kristy Pidgeon along the boards and Pidgeon chipped the puck forward with Taylor Turnquist streaking towards the net. Her shot up close found the pads of Calla Isaac, but the rebound came almost perfectly to Gabrielle David’s stick and she finished the play off at 0:43 in the third.

After a quiet stretch, the Knights added yet another insurance goal with just under six minutes to go. David brought puck up along the right side boards, and though her first pass was denied by the Brown defender skating along her side, her second pass zipped through the slot to Shelton, who chipped it in while crashing into Isaac at 14:14.

Shelton finished with four points, scoring two goals and assisted on two others. Giguere added three points with a goal and an assist, her sixth straight game against the Bears with at least one goal and at least two points.

Coulombe and Amanda Zeglen combined on the shutout for the Knights, stopping a total of 17 shots. It was the seventh shutout of the year for Clarkson and its fifth in league play. For Brown, Calla Isaac was called upon regularly, as she made 34 saves.

Clarkson finished with a 39-17 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Brown was held scoreless in its two chances with the extra attacker.

Future Sabres: Jacob Bryson

By Warren Kozireski —

One year ago, Rochester rookie defenseman Jacob Bryson was in the final stretch of the regular season in his junior year with nationally ranked Providence College on their way to the Frozen Four in Buffalo.

He finished among the top-20 in Hockey East in scoring with 28 points in 42 games and was named the Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award winner for the second consecutive season.

Now in his first professional season with the Amerks after being selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by Buffalo, he has experienced the same growing pains many young players—especially defensemen—need to adjust too, but there have been more than a few glimmers of what is to come.

“I just need to play my game and I think the points are going to come,” Bryson said in late-January. “Just get pucks to the net and the team is winning, so hopefully we can keep that going.

The London, Ontario native earned an assist Jan. 24in his return after being a healthy-scratch for the first time in his pro career two days prior. That came after his first real dry-spell offensively with four assists over a 23-game span.

“I made the decision that I felt it’s best for him as a young player that he needed a night off and I thought he had one of his best games all year for us tonight,” Rochester head coach Chris Taylor said about the game scratch. “Skating on pucks, getting pucks to the net, evading their forecheck—I thought he did a really good job and one of his best games.”

“It was kind of nice to sit up top and watch a game,” Bryson said. “I haven’t done that all year and played 40 straight, so it is different going from college where you play 40 games to playing 40 games and still have 36 left, so it’s a long season and to watch one up top was kind of good. Confidence-wise I knew I could come back and play well.

“Change the point of view on things and get right back into it.”

Playing most of the season paired with veteran Zach Redmond, the coaching staff decided to try some new pairings over the last few weeks and it seems to have sparked the group.

“I’ve played the majority of the season so far with “Reds” and I love playing with him…but kind of switch it up a little bit. When things are hitting the wall like they have the last ten games or so, sometimes you have to change things up and that’s what we’ve done the past few games.”

And he registered his first multi-point game two games later Jan. 31 versus Syracuse giving him 14 points in 43 games.

More importantly, the 5’9”, 179 lb. Bryson is among the best-skating blueliners in the league and uses that speed to get away from any potential heavy hits along the boards.

As the calendar turned to February, he was tied for second among all players on the team in plus/minus at +10, but near the bottom among the defensemen in shots on goal from his pass-first approach.

Rochester is backlogged in blueliners, but Bryson is making progress as he heads into the final two-plus months of his first professional regular season.

“It’s very demanding on the body as I’m learning, but learning from these older guys and the veterans about how to take care of my body and not being in school makes a difference.

“You have a lot of time at the rink or at home to recover and I think eating has been a big thing. We eat at home which I wasn’t able to do in college because we were in dorms, so here it’s all in your hands and so far, I think me and my roommates (Casey Fitzgerald and Brandon Hickey) have been doing a good job of coming to the rink every day prepared.

“I don’t cook that much, but my go-to is chicken and rice, especially for pre-game meals.”

The tally snapped his shutout streak at 196:25 minutes, just 1:06 shy of the school record, which is held by Joel Laing ’00 (197:31). The two-time Goaltender of the Week recipient in the month made at least 25 saves in every start, including 35 or more stops in two. His high for the month was 37 in a 3-0 shutout of Colgate on November 11.

In four ECAC Hockey contests during in the month, Savory went 4-0-0, with a 0.50 goals against average and a .984 save percentage, turning away 122 of 124 shots in 240:00 minutes. The former St. Catharines Falcons standout led the league in conference goals against average, save percentage, winning percentage and shutouts (2).

Savory has started 17 games for the Engineers this season, going 8-7-1, with a 2.20 goals against average and a .925 save percentage, with three shutouts – all since January 4. In 983:16 minutes, he has 446 saves on 482 shots, while playing 62.6% of the team’s minutes between the pipes.

In 12 ECAC Hockey contests, Savory is 6-5-1, with a 2.12 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. He has made 299 saves on 323 shots, with two shutouts. Tied for the most shutouts among conference goalies, he ranks fifth in save percentage and sixth in goals against average.

Savory has made 42 career appearances for the Engineers, including 40 as a starter. He is 13-22-5, with a 2.35 goals against average and a .926 save percentage, with four shutouts. He is the first RPI player to earn a Hockey Commissioners Association monthly award since Jason Kasdorf was Rookie of the Month in February of 2013 and became just the fourth goaltender in program history to register four shutouts before the end of his second season on the team, joining Nathan Marsters (5), Bill Sack (4) and Jason Kasdorf (4).

Devils Ink Kyle Cumiskey To AHL Contract

Cumiskey has played 18 games with the Binghamton Devils this season

BINGHAMTON – The Binghamton Devils announced that the club has signed defenseman Kyle Cumiskey to an American Hockey League contract for the rest of the 2019-20 season. The announcement came from Binghamton’s General Manager Tom Fitzgerald.

Cumiskey, 33, has played 18 games with Binghamton this season and has two goals and five assists. Last season, Cumiskey played 35 games for the Providence Bruins and recorded three goals and 15 assists for 18 points. The defenseman also appeared in one game with the Toronto Marlies and 11 games with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers.

The Abbotsford, BC native captured a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2014-15. Prior to his professional career, Cumiskey helped the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets to a Memorial Cup Championship in 2003-04 and a WHL Championship in 2004-05.

In 278 regular-season American Hockey League games with Binghamton, Albany, Lake Erie, Syracuse, Rockford, Toronto, and Providence, Cumiskey has 27 goals and 104 assists. Cumiskey has nine goals and 26 assists in 139 NHL games with Colorado and Chicago.

He was a 2005 seventh-round pick (222nd overall) of the Avalanche.

Fairport’s Sucese Checking Boxes For Penn State

By Warren Kozireski —

Penn State senior forward began the 2019-20 campaign with several boxes yet to be checked as he nears the completion of his collegiate career, but with seven games remaining in the regular season, he is getting closer to finishing off his bucket list.

Set a program record for points in a career (132 and counting), check.

Set a program record for career goals (60 and counting), check.

Next on the list is career shots-on-goal; he needed only 21 more to tie Chase Berger at 477 with seven games remaining, plus any playoff contests.

And the Fairport native is within hailing distance of the program record for career assists (84) needing 12 more to tie.

The 5’9”, 175 lb. is leading the Nittany Lions in scoring in points (30), assists (20), shots (96) and was tied for the team lead with four power play goals in helping them into first place in the Big Ten just ahead of Michigan State.

But as with most athletes, the individual accomplishments pale in comparison to what they strive for as a team. Penn State was ranked 8th in the nation—sixth in the PairWise. In this case, the next boxes to check are the regular season Big Ten title, the conference playoff championship and the NCAA tournament are three more boxes awaiting pen marks.

“It’s been a good ride these four years,” Sucese said after the Michigan series. “I wanted to come here and make an impact and I think I’ve done that now being the leading scorer in history and winning a Big Ten championship my first year.

“I think it’s been piling on from my development with the Jr. Sabres to The Gunnery and on to Dubuque (USHL) and now here. Just taking it year-by-year and really hone in on my strength and my skills in the summer and coming in ready to play in the fall.”

Sucese never played high school hockey and instead spent two seasons with the Jr. Sabres before heading to prep school at The Gunnery. He committed to Penn State in summer of 2014 before spending two more full campaigns in Dubuque prior to heading to Hockey Valley. He more than doubled his point total from 27 to 59 giving him momentum and confidence heading into his freshman year.

The Communication Arts and Sciences major was invited to the Boston Bruins development camp—his second NHL invite after Nashville had him following his freshman year in 2017.

“The ultimate goal is to get an NHL entry level (contract) and we’ll see what happens at the end of the year, but I am aspiring to play pro hockey.”

But not so fast. It’s a four-year blur, but first there are more memories and boxes to check over the final few months.

“The Big Ten tournament and setting the goal record in Minnesota before Christmas was a pretty cool accomplishment and beating Union 10-3 (3/25/17- highest scoring NCAA playoff game in 27 years at the time) setting a record was a pretty memorable moment for the program for sure.”

And he would change nothing about his path.

“I didn’t want to be an hour away down the Thruway, but I wanted my parents to be able to come to almost every game and they’ve done that so far for four years.”

Two members of the William Smith College hockey team were honored by the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. Senior forward Gina Scibetta was named the North Division’s Player of the Week and first-year forward Julianna Gong was tabbed the North Division’s Rookie of the Week.

Scibetta and Gong led the Herons to a 2-0-0 week against the top two teams in the UCHC South Division this past weekend. On Friday, William Smith cruised to an 8-2 win over Neumann, which entered the weekend ranked second in the south division. The next day, the Herons knocked off Manhattanville, the division leader, 5-4.

Scibetta finished the weekend with six points on three goals and three assists. Against the Knights, she pocketed a pair of goals and added two assists. With a goal and an assist in the first period, Scibetta became the first Heron to reach the 100-point plateau for her career. She added an assist in the second period and a goal in the third period. Against the Valiants, Scibetta had a goal and an assist. She set up Jules Kennedy’s goal that opened the scoring in the first period. Scibetta then scored in the third period. With points in both games over the weekend, Scibetta extended her point streak to eight games.

Through 20 games this season, Scibetta leads the team with 30 points on 11 goals and 19 assists. She is third in the UCHC and seventh in the nation in points per game (1.50 ppg) and is tied for second in the nation in assists.

Gong led William Smith with seven points on four goals and three assists last weekend. Against Neumann, she factored into six of William Smith’s eight goals. Gong’s four goals and six points matched Heron single-game records. She tied Julia Mings’ goal total from Jan. 12, 2019, and Taylor Morash’s point total from Jan. 14, 2018. Like Scibetta, Gong had a goal and an assist in the first period. She then completed the hat trick with back-to-back goals in the second period and added a fourth goal with five minutes remaining in regulation. Gong is the first Heron to record a hat trick this season. Against Manhattanville, she set up Scibetta’s third period goal. Gong has points in seven straight games and eight of the last nine.

Gong is second on the team with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists. She leads the UCHC and is third in the nation in rookie scoring (1.25 ppg).

Hoover Named Atlantic Hockey Player of The Month

0

Canisius senior forward Matt Hoover has been named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month for January, league officials announced on Wednesday.

Hoover becomes the second Canisius player in as many months to earn the distinction as fellow senior and linemate Nick Hutchison was tabbed AHA Player of the Month in December.

A native of Brantford, Ontario, Hoover led Atlantic Hockey in scoring for the first month of the calendar year, racking up 13 points on a league-best seven goals and six assists in nine games, guiding Canisius to a 3-2-4 record that also featured a trio of 3-on-3/shootout victories.

Hoover began the month with two goals, including the game winner in the finale, and an assist in a home-and-home series versus longtime rival RIT (Jan. 3-4). He followed that effort with another three-point weekend (one goal, two assists) in a pair of comeback ties at Bentley (Jan. 10-11). The forward also made history in the opener against the Falcons, scoring the decisive goal in the shootout to give the Griffs their first victory in the new overtime format.

During Canisius’ second home-and-home series against the Tigers (Jan. 24-25), Hoover finished the weekend with three goals, highlighted by a two-goal performance in the series opener at LECOM Harborcenter on Jan. 24. He closed out the month by factoring into all three goals (one goal, two assists) in a 3-2 overtime victory at Army on the final day of the month.

For the season, Hoover leads Canisius in scoring with 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists). The Hobey Baker Award candidate also sits tied for fourth in the Atlantic Hockey scoring race with 24 points while ranking in the top 10 in the league in both goals (11/T-6th) and assists (13/T-9th).

Since returning to action after the holiday break, Hoover is tied for the national lead in scoring along with Hutchison with 17 points in the Griffs’ last 12 contests.
