BROOKLYN, NY, December 29, 2017 – Metropolitan Riveters defender Michelle Picard has been named captain of Team NWHL for its games against the U.S. Olympic Team on Jan. 13 and 15 in Florida. The Massachusetts-born Picard was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in 2014 and won gold at the World Championships as a National Team player in 2013, 2015 and 2016. She was also a captain at Harvard in her junior and senior seasons.
“I’m very honored to be captain of this awesome group of NWHL players, with so many great leaders on this team,” said Picard. “I played alongside just about all of the women on the Olympic Team and have nothing but the ultimate respect for them and the national program. It’s a privilege for all of us to be a part of their preparations to bring the gold medal back to the U.S.”
Picard was selected as captain by Team NWHL general manager Hayley Moore in consultation with head coach Chad Wiseman.
“Shelly Picard is the ideal person to lead Team NWHL,” said Moore. “She is a proven leader from her time in Harvard, has extensive experience in the National Team program, and she has a wonderful perspective on and off the ice. There are many leaders on this team, but we felt strongly that Shelly was worthy of the honor of wearing the C.”
Team NWHL will face the U.S. Olympic Team in games on Jan. 13 at 6:15 pm and Jan. 15 at 2:15 pm at the U.S. team’s training complex at Florida Hospital Center Ice in Wesley Chapel, Florida. The exhibition games will be the final tune-ups for Team USA in preparation for the 2018 Olympic Winter
Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
The Team NWHL uniform for the series was also unveiled today. It was created by M Style Marketing, the global strategy, marketing and branding agency that designed the popular new logo and uniform of the Boston Pride.
Game-worn jerseys from the series will be available for purchase by fans via auction with MeiGray Group, the official game-worn source of the NWHL. In the coming weeks, details on available jerseys will be available at MeiGray.com.
