PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team (7-8-1, 6-4-0 ECAC West) stuck with No. 1 Plattsburgh (13-0-1, 7-0-0) throughout the entire contest, but the Lakers were kept off the board for a second straight game as they lost, 2-0, on Sunday.

Oswego State goalie Bridget Smith (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) kept Oswego State in the game by stopping 38 of the 40 shots she faced. Cardinal goalie Sydney Aveson registered her second consecutive shutout after making 15 saves.

After a scoreless first period, Plattsburgh applied pressure immediately, peppering Smith with four shots until Morgan MacInnis scored on the second period’s fifth shot. Teal Gove and Shannon Stewart fed MacInnis for her fourth goal of the season at the 3:39 mark. The Laker defense and Smith stood strong for the rest of the period, as she finished with 15 saves in the frame.

Oswego State started the third period one skater down after being whistled for a holding penalty late in the second, but the penalty-kill unit kept Plattsburgh off the scoreboard. The Lakers gained a power play a few minutes later. However, Oswego State was unable to get a shot off with the extra skater.

As the clock dwindled away, the Cardinals continued to press for an insurance goal, which came at the 14:18 mark. Plattsburgh went on its third and final power play of the game with 6:25 remaining in regulation following a Laker interference penalty. Stewart scored her fifth goal of the series after receiving a series of passes from Allison Era and Teal Gove.

Oswego State continued to fight to get back into the game, but was not able to get the puck past Aveson.

The Lakers return to the Campus Center Arena next weekend on Friday and Saturday in an important ECAC West series against Buffalo State.
