PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep over Morrisville defeating the Mustangs 4-2 Saturday night.
Plattsburgh State would jump out to a 1-0 lead when Matt Quilty found the back of the net for the second straight night 11:39 into the first period.
Connor Gorman would score the next three goals to put the Cardinals up 4-0.
The Shrewsbury, Mass., native would score two goals in a 23-second span in the final minute of the first period. His first one he would jam past Mustang goaltender Steven Dombrosky off a rebound off an initial Cole Stallard shot. Stallard would assist Gorman’s second, dishing a pass from behind the net and hitting the senior right into the slot for an easy goal.
Gorman would get his hat trick goal 11:42 into the second period on tic tac toe passing that found him on the far post where he reached around the defender to beat Dombrosky for a third time and give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage.
Morrisville would net the next two to cut the Plattsburgh State lead in half.
Mike Giacometti would get his first of the season with a top corner snipe over the glove of Cardinals goalie Spencer Finney with 1:05 left in the second.
The Mustangs would make it 4-2 with 12:11 left in the third period on Tyler Lepore’s fourth of the season, but that would be as close as Morrisville would get.
Finney finished with 23 saves on the 25 shots for his ninth win of the season. Dombrosky made 32 saves for the Mustangs.
Fourth ranked Plattsburgh State improved to 14-3-1 (7-1-1 SUNYAC) while Morrisville stumbles to 5-12-1 (1-9-0 SUNYAC)
The Cardinals will return to action at Fredonia on Friday before heading to Buffalo State on Saturday in pair of SUNYAC contests. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. puck drops.
