Plattsburgh Women’s Hockey Lose Two Over The Weekend

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey dropped an overtime thriller to No. 9 Endicott College, 4-3, in the Cardinal/Panther Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (6-1-0), which had its NCAA Division III women’s ice hockey record home-winning streak come to an end at 44 games, will face the loser of No. 5 Elmira College and No. 2 Middlebury College in the consolation game of the Cardinal/Panther Classic tomorrow at 2 p.m. Endicott will face the winner of Elmira and Middlebury in the championship game tomorrow at 5 p.m.

With the score tied at 3-3 in overtime, Endicott successfully killed off a key Plattsburgh State power play. With time winding down, the Gulls forced a turnover in the neutral zone that led to a breakaway for first-year forward Samantha Fantasia, who scored with a wrist shot high on the blocker side with 34.5 seconds remaining in overtime to make the final score 4-3. Senior forward Jacy Kuhlman tallied the assist. 

Each team scored once in the first period to make the score 1-1 going into the first intermission.

A little over halfway through the first period, senior defenseman Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) gave Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead with her first collegiate goal at the 10:59 mark. Killeen unleashed a slap shot from the left point that went over the goaltender’s right shoulder and in off of the crossbar. First-year forward Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearny Selects) and sophomore forward Jordan Kowalski (Westfield, Mass./Boston Jr. Eagles) recorded the assists. 

Endicott tied the game at 1-1 at 12:34 of the first period. Sophomore forward Quinn Healy took a pass from senior forward Courtney Sullivan and scored her third goal of the season with a low wrist shot from right in front of the goal.    

In the second period, Plattsburgh State scored two goals within a minute of each other to go in front, 3-1. Endicott scored the final goal of the period to make the Plattsburgh State lead 3-2 going into the second intermission.  

Senior defenseman Sierra Benjamin (Palm Coast, Fla./Northwood School) made the score 2-1 with a low shot from the right point that found its way through the goaltender’s five-hole at 9:28 of the second period. Junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) and graduate student forward Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) tallied the assists.

Less than a minute later, senior forward Sara Krauseneck (Saginaw, Mich./Northern Cyclones) finished off a string of passes with a shot from the slot for her sixth goal of the season to make the score 3-1 at 10:12. Boric and Killeen tallied the assists. 

Junior forward Kaylee Liberty scored for Endicott on the power play at 13:25 to make the score 3-2. After an initial shot from the right point by junior defenseman Nicole Connor was saved, Liberty got to the and rebound scored with a high wrist shot. Sophomore defenseman Jess Burwell recorded the secondary assist.

In the third period, Endicott tied the game at 3-3 on Healy’s second goal of the game, assisted by junior forward Kat Keith, at the 10:20 mark. Healy chipped a shot over the shoulder of the Plattsburgh State goaltender. 

The Cardinals tried to find the game-winning goal as they outshot the Gulls 17-6 in the third period, but the score remained tied and went to overtime. In overtime, the Cardinals had the first eight shots on goal, but the Gulls’ junior goaltender Michaela O’Brien (5-0-0) kept the puck out of the net. The stage was set for Fantasia who scored on Endicott’s only shot on goal of the overtime period to make the final score 4-3 in overtime.

Senior goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School), who is 4-1-0 on the season, made 14 saves for Plattsburgh State. O’Brien stopped 56 shots for Endicott.

Plattsburgh State finished 0-of-3 on the power play and Endicott was 1-of-1.

The Cardinals held a 59-18 edge in shots on goal.

PLATTSBURGH DROP CONSOLATION GAME

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — No. 1 Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey was edged by No. 5 Elmira College, 4-3 in overtime, in the Cardinal/Panther Classic consolation game on Sunday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (6-2-0) next plays a road Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL) game against SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. Elmira (8-1-0) hosts Castleton University at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.  

The game remained scoreless until 18:52 of the first period when Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 lead. Junior defenseman Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) had an initial shot on goal that was kicked out by the goaltender. First-year forward Lily Stumm (Cranberry Township, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) got to the rebound in the slot and quickly scored on a wrist shot for her third goal of the season.

Elmira struck quickly in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Senior forward Nary McCafferty skated down the ice on a 3-on-1 rush and scored her sixth goal of the season with a wrist shot from below the right faceoff dot at the 1:08 mark. Sophomore defenseman Jenna Ellis and first-year goaltender Leonie Kuehberger tallied the assists. 

With under five minutes to play in the second period, Plattsburgh State responded with a power-play goal to take a 2-1 lead. Junior forward Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored her seventh goal of the season on a wrist shot from below the left faceoff dot at 15:12. First-year defenseman Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) and senior forward Nicole Unsworth (Milwaukee, Wis./East Coast Wizards) tallied the assists.

However, Elmira responded to tie the game at 2-2 at 18:55 of the second period. Junior forward Holly Riva finished off a rush with a close-range shot through the goaltender’s five-hole. Junior forward Kelly Millins and senior forward Brooke McArdle recorded the assists.

In the third period, Elmira took a 3-2 lead on a shorthanded goal at the 1:10 mark. McCafferty finished off a rush with a backhand over the right shoulder of the goaltender. Sophomore defenseman Lexi Hoffman and junior forward Claire Meeder tallied the assists.

Unsworth responded for Plattsburgh State with her seventh goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 at 7:54 of the third period. Unsworth forced a turnover at the left sideboards, skated behind the net, and scored with a wraparound shot inside the right post. 

The score remained tied and the game headed to overtime.

In overtime, Plattsburgh State’s junior forward Tatem Cheney (Ottawa, Ontario/Ottawa Lady 67’s) had a breakaway, but her shot hit the crossbar at 1:55 of overtime and the game remained tied. 

Later in overtime, Elmira’s senior forward Eliza Beaudin skated onto the puck in the left circle and unleashed a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot that went over the goaltender’s right shoulder and under the crossbar to hand Plattsburgh State the 4-3 setback in overtime. 

Senior goaltender Ashley Davis (Winterville, N.C./Northwood School), who made seven saves and allowed three goals in 41:10 played. Junior goaltender Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) is now 2-1-0 on the season. Nease made seven saves and allowed one goal over 22:01 played in relief of Davis. Kuehberger (6-1-0) stopped 44 shots for Elmira.

Plattsburgh State finished 1-of-4 on the power play and Elmira was 0-of-4.

The Cardinals held a 47-18 edge in shots on goal.
