Potdam Falls to Chatham

PITTSBURGH, PA.Chatham University (2-17, 1-13 ECAC West) and the flu
teamed up to defeat the the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (8-12-2,
4-8-1) 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Bears had six player out of the lineup
including both goaltenders. Katrina Hawkins posted a hat trick to lead the
Cougars, while junior assistant captain Jenn Crawford scored both of the
Bears’ goals. Freshman defenseman Heather Silcott was forced to make an
emergency start in goal for Potsdam.

Hawkins opened the scoring at the 11:36 mark of the first period. Potsdam
picked up the play after the goal and Crawford tied the score just over
four minutes later. Sophomore forward Emilee Hazelden assisted on the
goal. Hawkins answered just 2:03 later, giving Chatham the lead for good.
The score remained 2-1 after one period, with Potsdam holding a 10-7 shot
advantage.

At the 7:02 mark of the second period, Casey Morfeld made it 3-1 Cougars
and Hawkins netted her third tally of the game on the power play almost 11
minutes later. Again the Bears outshot Chatham 8-5 in the second period,
but were unable to close the gap.

Potsdam pulled out all the stops in the final 20 minutes, dominating the
play and outshooting the Cougars 17-1. However, Chatham goalie Megan
Buchanan stood on her head, turning aside all but one shot. Crawford
scored a power-play goal at the 7:45 mark to close the scoring at 4-2.
Potsdam continued to pelt Buchanan with pucks for the rest of the game and
even pulled Silcott for an extra attacker with two minutes remaining, but
couldn’t get any closer.

Conophy finished with nine saves, while Buchanan earned her second win of
the season with 33 stops. Potsdam was 1-4 on the power play and Chatham
was 1-5.

The Bears return home to face No. 1 Plattsburgh next Sunday at 2 p.m.
