PITTSBURGH, PA.—Sophomore forward Alexandra Holowka (Winnipeg,
Manitoba/Balmoral Hall) scored two goals to lead the SUNY Potsdam women’s
hockey team (8-11-2, 4-7-1 ECAC West) to a 3-0 win over Chatham University
(3-17-0, 0-13-0) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Sally Mooney (New
Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) also scored for the Bears and junior
goaltender Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder)
stopped 13 shots for her third shutout of the season.
Potsdam outshot the Cougars 16-6 in the opening period. Mooney got the
Bears on the board at the 17:10 mark with an assist from junior forward
Amanda Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Clarkson University).
Potsdam dominated a penalty filled middle stanza with an 11-2 shot
advantage. Holowka doubled Potsdam’s lead at the 18:57 mark on a helper
from senior captain Katie Komsa (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie
AA Midget).
The Bears never relinquished control of the contest in the third period.
Mooney set up Holowka’s second tally at the 7:15 mark to put the game
away. Potsdam outshot Chatham 9-5 in the final 20 minutes.
Cougar goalie Megan Buchanan made 33 saves in a losing cause. Potsdam was
0-3 on the power play and Chatham was 0-4. Salvarinas’ shutout was the
fourth of her career.
Bears Head Coach Jay Green was pleased with the performance.
“It was a solid team effort both offensively and defensively,” said Green.
“Dawna made key saves on about five opportunities. She came up big for us
in chance that could have changed the complexion of the game. And Alex
scored two big goals for us. Everyone worked really hard today.”
