POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) scored a third period goal, but the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (9-13-2, 3-12-1 ECAC West) came up short in a 2-1 loss to Chatham University (7-14-1, 3-12-1). Senior assistant captain Abby Tardelli (Potsdam, N.Y./North Country Ice Storm) made 26 saves for the Bears on Senior Day.
The Cougars outshot Potsdam 10-8 in the first period and scored the only goal. Junior forward Jenny Jones (Kernersville, N.C./Anaheim Lady Ducks) scored at 5:16 to give Chatham the lead for good.
The Bears killed off a penalty early in the second before going on consecutive power plays of their own. However, Chatham sophomore goalie Sydney Isbell (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens) turned away all eight chances. The score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.
At the 8:19 mark of the third period freshman forward Kristina Block (Scarborough, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) scored the eventual game-winner. Potsdam turned up the pressure after the goal, outshooting the Cougars 15-5 in the period. Ott finally solved Isbell at 10:18 with an assist from senior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) to close the gap to 2-1. Tardelli was pulled with 1:21 remaining, but the Bears couldn’t get the equalizer.
Isbell stopped 30 shots to earn the win. Chatham was 0-for-1 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 0-for-4.
Potsdam wraps up the season next Saturday when the Bears host No. 1 Plattsburgh at 3 p.m.
