Big rally lifts Bears over Bengals, 5-4

MASSENA, N.Y.裕he SUNY Potsdam men痴 hockey team (3-2, 2-2 SUNYAC) scored
four third period goals and got a hat trick from junior assistant captain
Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) to defeat Buffalo State
(2-4-1, 1-3-1) 5-4 at Massena Arena on Saturday night. Arnold (3-1-4) and
junior forward Adam Place (Scarborough, Ontario/Bowmansville Eagles)
(1-3-4) each had four-point nights and freshman goalie Austin Keiser
(Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) made 29 saves to earn his second career
victory.

Junior forward Mike Zanella (Ithaca, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) gave the Bengals
a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 10:10 mark of the first period.
Arnold responded a with a man-advantage tally of his own at 14:02 with an
assist from Place. The score remained 1-1 at the intermission.

Zanella put Buffalo State up 2-1 at 7:49 of the second period with an even
strength goal. The teams traded penalties through middle of the period,
before the Bengals struck again. Seventeen seconds into Buffalo State痴
fifth power play, senior forward Trevor McKinney (Oakwood,
Ontario/Peterborough Liftlock Stars) made it 3-1 and the Bengals took the
two-goal advantage into the second break.

The craziness started with a power-play goal from Place just 20 seconds
into the third period. Junior defenseman Kevin Carpenter (Denver,
Colo./Notre Dame Hounds) and Arnold recorded the assists. At 8:51, junior
forward Shane Avery (Fort Covington, N.Y./Cornwall Colts) put the Bengals
up 4-2. Three minutes later, Arnold answered with another power-play
marker on assists from Place and sophomore forward Trevor Cope (Swartz
Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights). It took just 25 more seconds for
freshman forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears)
to knot the score at 4-4 for with his first collegiate goal. Freshman
forward Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and sophomore
forward Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution) notched the
assists on the play. After a series of penalties, Potsdam made the most of
a five-on-three power play. Arnold netted the game-winner with just 1:32
remaining on Place痴 third assist of the night. Buffalo State pulled
junior goalie Kevin Carr (Unionville, Ontario/Atlanta Jr. Knights) with 55
seconds left, but was unable to tie the score.

Carr finished with 38 saves on the night. Potsdam outshot the Bengals
43-33 and was 4-7 on the power play. Buffalo State was 2-7 on the man
advantage.

The Bears are now 28-10-3 in the all-time series with the Bengals and have
won three of the last four meetings.

Potsdam hits the road for the first time this season with games at
top-ranked Oswego and Cortland next weekend. The Bears face the Lakers at
7 p.m. on Friday and the Red Dragons at the same time on Saturday.
