CANTON, N.Y.-Sophomore forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) scored 1:32 into overtime to lift the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (9-15-1) to a 4-3 victory over SUNY Canton (2-22-1) in the Bears season finale. Senior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) and junior assistant captain Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) also scored for Potsdam.
The Kangaroos took a 1-0 lead at the 5:59 mark of the first period as Lindsey Hall found the back of the net. After the teams traded penalties, Fayerman evened the score with a power-play goal at 15:44. Ott and junior assistant captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) assisted on the play. The score remained 1-1 into the first intermission.
The second period featured more even play with the Bears outshooting Canton 10-8. Each team added another brief, fruitless power play midway through the second period. With 45 seconds remaining, freshman forward Brenna Wilson (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) set up classmate Anna-Rose Bertin (Marathon, Ontario/Canadian International Hockey Academy) to put the Bears up 2-1.
Just over six minutes into the third period, Mooney scored on a helper from junior defenseman Emily Kriwox (Tupper Lake, N.Y./Tupper Lake Lumberjacks). The point was the first of Kriwox’s career. The rest of the period went the Roos’ way. Twelve seconds later, Maddy Hetman scored to close the gap to 3-2. At 10:40, Margret Troiano tied the game. The Bears went on a 39-second, five-on-three power play with 3:02 left in regulation, but came up empty.
Potsdam started overtime on the penalty kill for 45 seconds, but kept Canton from capitalizing. Ninety-two seconds into the extra session Ott sent everyone home. Junior forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y./Norwich University) and Fayerman recorded the assists.
In goal, freshman Brianna Fiddler (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Scanlon Creek) made a career-high 31 saves to earn her second collegiate victory. Peyton Stafne made 32 stops for the Roos.
Potsdam was 1-for-7 on the man advantage and Canton finished 0-for-4.
The contest concluded the career of Fayerman, the Bears’ lone senior. The three-year captain finishes up with 34 goals and 30 assists for 64 points, placing her fourth on the Bears’ all-time scoring list. Fayerman played in 100 games for Potsdam, second only to Jenn Crawford ’14 (102).
